Zombies' Colin Blunstone Reveals His Five Essential Albums

Colin Blunstone, the last surviving member of the Zombies still performing, shared his personal record collection recently, offering insight into the artists who have shaped his musical taste over decades.

Based near Working in Surrey, U.K., Blunstone gravitates toward singer-songwriters with occasional dips into classical and flamenco guitar music. His listening habits reveal an ear for craftsmanship and emotional depth rather than technical fidelity—he prioritizes great songs above all else, regardless of the medium playing them.

Joni Mitchell's "Blue" tops his list. The album has traveled with him throughout his career, he explained, with every track delivering poetic lyrics and adventurous melodies rooted in Mitchell's distinctive tuning techniques. "Blue" sounds as vital today as upon its release, he noted.

Duncan Browne's self-titled work holds personal significance. Blunstone first encountered Browne on a Berlin television program where both were promoting singles. Years later, they shared a London flat, and Blunstone witnessed songs taking shape during their writing process. He called Browne's guitar work and songwriting "staggeringly good" while expressing bewilderment at the artist's relative obscurity.

Stephen Bishop's "Careless" impressed Blunstone with its consecutive beautiful songs and perfect arrangements. The album's sensitive performances leave listeners emotionally affected, he said, though he admitted the work's scope both inspires and humbles him.

Christopher Cross rounds out the collection with what Blunstone describes as timeless classics penned by a master storyteller. Cross earned praise from Blunstone as an exceptional live performer—one of his favorite concert experiences.

Georgie Sweet's "I Swear to You" completes his five essential records. Blunstone hailed Sweet as an incredible writer and performer, singling out her harmony vocals and the album's title track. He views artists like Sweet as custodians of the industry's future, crafting work worthy of music's greatest names.

Blunstone is currently recording a new album, continuing a career that has already spanned decades with the Zombies.
