LA County Takes Legal Action Against Roblox Over Child Safety Failures
Roblox now faces a lawsuit from Los Angeles County officials who say the gaming platform has become a haven for predators targeting minors. The county filed the legal action Thursday, arguing that the company prioritizes profits over protecting young users from exploitation and inappropriate material.
The core complaint centers on what authorities describe as inadequate safeguards. Children across LA County have encountered sexually explicit content and grooming on the platform, according to the filing. County officials specifically point out that Roblox has not deployed sufficient content moderation or age-verification systems, despite publicly claiming the service remains safe for kids.
"Roblox has a responsibility to keep kids safe, but instead it has allowed its platform to become a place where children can be exposed to grooming and exploitation. Los Angeles County is taking action to hold the company accountable and demand real safeguards," said Los Angeles County Board Chair and 1st District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis.
The gaming company isn't new to these kinds of battles. Similar lawsuits have popped up in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Texas—all raising comparable concerns about child protection shortcomings.
Recently, Roblox rolled out new safety measures, including a facial estimation tool for age verification. Yet these additions haven't stopped the legal pressure. The platform claims roughly 151 million daily active users, with over 40% under age 13.
The company fired back with a statement pushing back against the allegations. "Roblox is built with safety at its core, and we continue to evolve and strengthen our protections every day," the statement read. "We have advanced safeguards that monitor our platform for harmful content and communications, and users cannot send or receive images via chat, avoiding one of the most prevalent opportunities for misuse seen elsewhere online."
"Safety is a constant and consistent focus of our work," Roblox added. "We take swift action against anyone found to violate our safety rules and work closely with law enforcement to support investigations and help hold bad actors accountable."
Rafael Carbajal, who heads LA County's Department of Consumer and Business Affairs, viewed the lawsuit as essential. "This lawsuit highlights the alarming reality of what happens when Big Tech puts profits over our children's safety," he said. "Roblox has long been aware that predators use its product to target and exploit children, yet it has failed to take the actions necessary to prevent this horrific practice. Children are paying the price."
