Bad Bunny Joins Viggo Mortensen in 'Porto Rico' Caribbean Western
Bad Bunny is heading to the big screen in a major way. The reggaeton superstar will star alongside Viggo Mortensen, Edward Norton, and Javier Bardem in 'Porto Rico,' an ambitious historical drama that marks the directorial debut of rapper and songwriter Residente.
The project centers on the true story of Puerto Rican revolutionary José Maldonado Román, who led a band of former convicts in armed resistance against colonialism during the late 1800s. Residente and screenwriter Alexander Dinelaris developed the screenplay, with the film officially announced in 2023.
For Residente, the film represents a long-held ambition. "I have dreamed of making a film about my country since I was a child," he told Deadline. "Puerto Rico's true history has always been surrounded by controversy. This film is a reaffirmation of who we are—told with the intensity and honesty that our history deserves."
Bad Bunny's involvement comes at peak visibility for the artist. His Super Bowl LIV halftime performance in February became a 13-minute celebration of his homeland, reaching approximately 128.2 million viewers and sparking a 245% surge in Puerto Rico-related internet searches. Born Benito Martínez Ocasio in San Juan in 1994, Bad Bunny has built his career as one of music's biggest global acts while remaining deeply connected to the island.
The star's relationship with Puerto Rico extends beyond performances. His exclusive 2023 residency on the island—which reserved multiple shows for locals only—generated an estimated $300 million injection into the Puerto Rican economy through ticket sales and tourism.
Historically, the island's name carries weight. Spanish colonizers called it Puerto Rico beginning in the 1500s, though the indigenous Taíno people knew it as Borikén. After Spain lost the Spanish-American War in 1898, it ceded the territory to the United States. The U.S. officially renamed it Porto Rico from 1900 until 1932, when Congress restored the Spanish spelling. The island's residents received U.S. citizenship in 1917 through the Jones Act.
