About Hellhammer
Hellhammer was a Swiss extreme metal band formed in 1982 who laid the groundwork for black metal and thrash with their raw, primitive sound on songs like "Messiah" and "Satanic Rites." Their lo-fi production and blasphemous lyrics on releases like the "Apocalyptic Raids" EP created a template for underground metal's most extreme tendencies. Though active for only two years, the band's influence proved monumental when founder Tom Gabriel Fischer evolved the project into Celtic Frost, one of metal's most innovative forces. Hellhammer's deliberately crude approach and occult imagery helped birth the black metal aesthetic that would dominate extreme music for decades.
