About Garbage
Garbage is an American-Scottish alternative rock band formed in Madison, Wisconsin in 1994, who emerged as one of the most distinctive and influential acts of the '90s alternative scene. The supergroup, featuring Scottish vocalist Shirley Manson alongside American producers Butch Vig, Duke Erikson, and Steve Marker, crafted a darkly seductive sound that blended grunge guitars with electronic textures, trip-hop beats, and Manson's sultry, commanding vocals. Their self-titled 1995 debut album spawned iconic hits like "Only Happy When It Rains" and "Stupid Girl," establishing their signature aesthetic of beautiful melancholy wrapped in layers of distorted guitars and programmed drums. The band's sound evolved from the more electronic-leaning experimentation of "Version 2.0" (1998) with tracks like "Push It" and "Special," to the stripped-down rock approach of later albums like "Strange Little Birds" (2016). Manson's fierce, unapologetic persona and the band's exploration of themes around sexuality, depression, and female empowerment made them cultural icons who influenced countless alternative and electronic acts. With over 2,900 songs across 507 releases spanning nearly three decades, Garbage has maintained their relevance by consistently reinventing their sound while preserving the dark, cinematic quality that made songs like "You Look So Fine" so compelling. Their ability to seamlessly merge organic and synthetic elements helped define the sound of late-'90s alternative rock and established them as pioneers in the intersection of rock and electronic music.
