Foo Fighters – Wheels Lyrics

Rock

One, two, three, four

I know what you're thinkin'
We were going down
I can feel the sinkin'
Then I came around

And everyone I've loved before
Flashed before my eyes
And nothing mattered anymore
I looked into the sky

Well, I wanted something better, man
I wished for something new
And I wanted something beautiful
I wished for something true
Been looking for a reason, man
Something to lose

When the wheels come down
(When the wheels come down)
When the wheels touch ground
(When the wheels touch ground)
And you feel like it's all over
There's another round for you
When the wheels come down
(When the wheels come down)

Know your head is spinning
Broken hearts will mend
This is our beginning
Coming to an end

Well, you wanted something better, man
You wished for something new
Well, you wanted something beautiful
You wished for something true
Been looking for a reason, man
Something to lose

When the wheels come down
(When the wheels come down)
When the wheels touch ground
(When the wheels touch ground)
And you feel like it's all over
There's another round for you
When the wheels come down
(When the wheels come down)

When the wheels come down
(When the wheels come down)
When the wheels touch ground
(When the wheels touch ground)
And you feel like it's all over
There's another round for you
When the wheels come down
(When the wheels come down)

When the wheels come down
(When the wheels come down)
When the wheels touch ground
(When the wheels touch ground)
And you feel like it's all over
There's another round for you
When the wheels come down
(When the wheels come down)

About This Song

"Wheels" is a soaring rock anthem about resilience and finding hope in moments of crisis, using the metaphor of an airplane landing to represent life's turbulent journeys. The lyrics explore themes of mortality, love, and renewal as the narrator reflects on a near-death experience where "everyone I loved before flashed before my eyes," ultimately finding strength to continue despite uncertainty. Musically, the song builds from introspective verses to an explosive, anthemic chorus with Dave Grohl's powerful vocals and the band's signature wall of guitars creating an uplifting, arena-ready sound. The track stands out as one of Foo Fighters' most emotionally resonant songs, capturing both vulnerability and triumph while showcasing their ability to transform personal struggle into universal catharsis. Its placement on their greatest hits collection reflects its importance as a defining moment in the band's catalog, demonstrating their evolution from grunge origins to stadium rock masters.

So the Foo's debut of this song was at a USO concert at the White House. Though there may be other meanings to the song, I think it's fitting that most of the lyrics fit with what many of our wounded soldiers experience being evacuated by helicopter from a battleground. When you're lying there on the ground in pain and you think it's all over, and you're not going to make it back home, the wheels of the MEDEVAC helicopter touch the ground next to you and you know you might get a second chance. Those dusty black wheels are the best sight you could hope to see. Thank you to all in the search&rescue community for your service, "so that others may live."

probably close or related OP, but Dave Grohl had a big phobia of flying. I'm pretty sure it is him getting over having to fly, since they tour all the time.

To me, it sounds like someone in a relationship who has started an affair because maybe they were curious if they were missing something. Then realized they were happier with their previous relationship and ended the affair. This is their explanation to the person they were running around with, telling him/her their broken heart will mend. Just a thought.

I can see the point about a possible infidelity and the repercussions from that. For some reason, though, I almost feel like maybe the relationship was in trouble due to a depression on one part's side and how it affected them individually and together. And then the eventual coping/dealing with the problem.

Quite possibly it's about Ezekiel's vision of the chariot of God in Ezekiel chapters 1 and 10 in the Bible. God's throne is on it and there is an emphasis on the four wheels touching the ground. If you look at the words closely in the song it talks about death, sinking, going down, and just when you think it's over there is another round. He looks into the sky (where God is). He wants something better than this life, something new, something beautiful. He wishes to (not for) something true. The Bible destribes God's word as truth. He says broken hearts will mend. He says this is our beginning (our phyiscal life) coming to an end. He says there's another round when the wheels come down.
