downhere – How Many Kings Lyrics

Christian

Follow the star to a place unexpected
Would you believe after all we've projected
A child in a manger?
Lowly and small, the weakest of all
Unlikeliest hero, wrapped in his mother's shawl
Just a child, is this who we've waited for?

'Cause how many kings stepped down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
And how many gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that has torn all apart?
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?

Bringing our gifts for the newborn Savior
All that we have, whether costly or meek
Because we believe
Gold for His honor and frankincense for His pleasure
And myrrh for the cross He'll suffer
Do you believe? Is this who we've waited for?
(Is this who we've waited for?)

How many kings stepped down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
And how many gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that has torn all apart?
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?

Only one did that for me
Oh-oh-oh
All for me, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

All for me (all for me)
All for you (all for you)
All for me (all for me)
All for you
All for me, all for you
All for me (all for me)
All for you

How many kings stepped down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least?
How many gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that has torn all apart?
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?
Only one did that for me

All for me, all for you

About This Song

"How Many Kings" is a contemplative Christmas rock ballad that explores the radical humility of the incarnation through thought-provoking rhetorical questions. The song contrasts earthly expectations of power and majesty with the unexpected reality of Jesus being born as a vulnerable child in humble circumstances, emphasizing themes of divine love, sacrifice, and the upside-down nature of God's kingdom. Musically, Downhere delivers the message through a building rock arrangement that moves from gentle verses to a soaring, anthemic chorus, with the repeated question "how many kings stepped down from their thrones?" serving as both a powerful hook and theological statement. The song stands out in the Christmas music landscape by focusing not just on the birth narrative but on its deeper implications about a God who abandons privilege to "romance a world," making it both a worship anthem and a profound meditation on divine love.

I LOVE this song! Beautiful message, beautiful melody. "Only one God, only one Lord, only one great, only one King, only one father" - Our Heavenly Father is the only one who did all of those things for me... and for you. We don't deserve it, but he made His son the perfect sacrifice for us in spite of our inadequacy. How humbling, and how amazing!

I also agree, I would love to hear this song a lot more all year long. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it and love it more when I learned all the words. It does not need to be saved for just the holidays. R KS

I love that my music station plays this song year-round. I first heard it at Christmas and was afraid they would stop playing it, but I've heard it sporadically all year!
